Sir Lowry's Pass Village sits at the foot of the pass that carries the N2 over the Hottentots Holland, about 60km from Cape Town. It began as an outspan where travellers watered their oxen at two streams, had its own post office by 1846, and grew again when the first steam train stopped here in 1890 - the old railway station later became the post office itself. In the early 1900s villagers made a living selling the wild flowers that grew in profusion on the slopes above, which is a lovely thing for a florist to know.
