Nobody enjoys asking a florist what things cost, so here is the answer up front: what flowers sell for in South Africa, by flower and by budget. Every rand figure below is read off our own live catalogue of 189 items rather than estimated. Counted on 4 October 2026, and dated for a reason, because flower prices move.

The short version: on our catalogue a bouquet usually costs between R300 and R800, and two thirds of everything on this site sits inside that window. Below it you are buying a small bunch. Above it you are paying for size, for a vase that stays behind, or for a flower that is slow to grow.

A rand figure on its own tells you very little about flowers. Mostly it tells you how many stems are in the box.

What Flowers Cost in South Africa: The Short Version

Chart of price bands across the 189 items on this site, gift hampers included, showing 8 percent under R300, 34 percent between R300 and R500, 32 percent between R500 and R800, 17 percent between R800 and R1500, and 8 percent above R1500
Where the 189 items on this site sit, gift hampers included. Counted from our own catalogue, 4 October 2026.

Counted across the whole catalogue — 189 items, from a small hand-tied bunch to a hundred-rose vase — the middle price is R589.95. That figure includes gift hampers, though. Strip those out and look only at the 120 flower arrangements and the middle price drops to R499.95. The lowest price on the site is R159.95; the highest is R4,299.95.

Split into budget bands:

  • Under R300 — 16 items, 8% of the range. Small bunches, mostly: a lily bunch, two small sunflower mixes, compact rose arrangements, gerberas. Fourteen of the sixteen are flowers; the other two are small gifts.
  • R300 to R500 — 65 items, 34%. The busiest band by a distance, and where the standard wrapped or boxed bouquet lives.
  • R500 to R800 — 61 items, 32%. Bigger arrangements and mixed varieties, with vased arrangements now common, alongside chocolate and bubbly gift boxes.
  • R800 to R1,500 — 32 items, 17%. Fewer than a third of these are flowers: larger rose arrangements and premium proteas. The rest are whisky crates, personalised gifts and hampers.
  • R1,500 and up — 15 items, 8%. The biggest rose arrangements and the King Protea Bouquet, though most of this band is whisky, champagne and gourmet gift crates.

Flowers are a bigger industry here than most people assume, which is part of why a real range exists at every price. South Africa is the third-largest exporter of cut flowers on the African continent, with exports of over R1,7 billion in 2021 and around 30 million stems leaving the Western Cape every year, according to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.

Prices by Flower Type

Each figure below is the lowest, middle and highest price in that category on this site, counted across every arrangement in that category on 4 October 2026.

How much does a bouquet of flowers cost in South Africa?

A mixed bouquet costs between R299.95 and R699.95, with the middle price at R399.95. That is one of the tightest ranges of any category we sell, and the right answer to give anyone who asks cold: a bouquet is a four-hundred-rand purchase here unless you deliberately go bigger or smaller. The bottom is a wrapped mixed bunch; the top is a larger arrangement with proteas or roses folded in.

How much are roses in South Africa?

Rose arrangements run from R199.95 to R4,299.95 — by far the widest spread of any flower category on the site, and the reason a rose price is nearly meaningless without context. By type the middle price is R399.95 for a general rose bouquet, R599.95 for red roses, R589.95 for pink and R499.95 for mixed-colour. Red and pink sit close together in the middle, R10 apart, and the lowest-priced rose arrangement on the site, at R199.95, pairs red roses with sunflowers.

How much is 100 roses in South Africa?

R4,299.95 for the hundred-rose arrangement we sell, presented in a glass cylinder vase. It is the single most expensive item in the catalogue. The next steps down are large rose arrangements between R1,599.95 and R3,299.95, so the jump to a hundred is real rather than a rounding. If the gesture matters more than the number, a smaller arrangement conditioned properly looks better in the room on day five.

How much do lilies cost?

Lily arrangements run from R199.95 to R799.95, with the middle at R474.95. Lilies are the quiet value pick of the catalogue: R199.95 is the lowest price in our whole flower range and a lily bunch is one of only three arrangements at it, and fourteen of the sixteen sit under R700. The whole category stays under R800. Lilies also open over several days, so a bunch bought tight in bud gives a week of changing appearance rather than one good afternoon.

What do proteas cost in South Africa?

Protea arrangements start at R399.95 and reach R1,799.95, with the middle price at R699.95 — the highest middle price of any flower type in this guide, and about forty percent above the middle price for roses. There is a horticultural reason. SANBI’s plant record for Protea cynaroides, the King Protea, notes that the plants are generally about four or five years old from seed before they flower. A rose bush is cut continuously; a protea farm waits half a decade for its first crop. That wait is in the price.

How much is a sunflower bouquet?

Sunflower arrangements cost between R199.95 and R769.95, with the middle at R499.95. The two lowest-priced are sunflowers mixed with other flowers (red roses in one, lilac blooms in the other) rather than pure sunflowers, and at the middle price there are already sunflowers in a vase. Sunflowers are physically large, so a modest stem count reads as a generous bouquet.

How much do gerbera daisies cost?

Gerbera arrangements run from R299.95 to R699.95, middle price R399.95: the same shape as a mixed bouquet, and one of the most consistently priced categories we sell. Nine of the thirteen sit between R299.95 and R399.95, so there is very little guesswork involved. If you want colour rather than a particular flower, this is where the money goes furthest.

Which Price Band Fits Which Occasion

Price is only half the question; the other half is what the flowers are doing. The figures below are the middle price on each of our own occasion pages, counted the same way and on the same day as everything else here. That is what the range offers, not a guess at what people spend.

Around R400 — the thinking-of-you send. The middle price for a thank-you send is R399.95, and the range opens at R249.95. There is no big date to rise to; you are putting something living on someone’s desk, and a small arrangement says that better than a large one does.

Around R500 — the standard occasion. Both our get-well range and our gifts-for-her selection sit at a middle price of R499.95. For get-well flowers that size makes sense: ward space is small, and somebody eventually has to carry the vase home.

Around R700 — the occasions with a date on them. Three collections share a middle price of R699.95: our congratulations range, our anniversary collection, and our romance collection. If an occasion has been in the diary for months, this is the band that reads as though you knew it was coming.

Around R1,000 — flowers with something alongside them. The men’s side of our gift range has the highest middle price of any collection in this guide, at R999.95, and nothing in it is priced below R399.95 — where every other collection here opens between R160 and R300. That is not flowers costing more: it mixes sunflower and protea arrangements with spirit and gourmet hampers, and the hampers pull the middle up.

What do funeral and sympathy flowers cost?

About the same as anything else. The middle price in our sympathy collection is R549.95, and nine of the twelve arrangements there fall between R300 and R700 — so sympathy flowers are not a separate, more expensive category, whatever the occasion makes you assume. Form matters more than price: something for the service is usually larger and white or cream, while something sent to the family’s home a week later is smaller, and lands better precisely because it arrives after everyone else has stopped calling.

How much does it cost to send flowers in Cape Town?

The arrangement is the number you are choosing, and two thirds of what is available to send sits between R300 and R800. Whatever delivery charge applies is added at checkout, so you see the total before you commit. Same-day delivery is offered on many arrangements, but the cut-off is set per product and per day, so check it when you order. That is the part worth knowing, because a bunch that arrives on the right afternoon beats a larger one on the wrong one.

Why Two Bouquets at the Same Price Are Not the Same

Why are supermarket flowers cheaper than a florist’s?

Because they are two different products with the same name. A supermarket bunch is priced as grocery stock: bought in volume, wrapped at source, stood on an open shelf in a warm shop. A florist’s arrangement is priced as a made object — stems selected one at a time, cut, stripped, conditioned and arranged by a person, then kept cold until it leaves.

The conditioning step is the one nobody sees and the one that costs. The Royal Horticultural Society describes conditioning as preparing cut flowers to prolong their longevity in displays, and its guidance is to stand prepared stems in clean water in a cool place for at least two to three hours, ideally overnight, before they are arranged at all. That is hours of handling and cool storage per bunch before anyone ties a knot, and it is why the difference shows up on day four rather than on the counter.

None of which makes the supermarket bunch a bad buy. It makes it a different one. If the flowers are for your own kitchen and you will replace them next week, grocery stock is doing exactly the job it was priced to do. If they are being sent to someone, arriving cold, arranged and conditioned is most of what you are paying for.

What is the cheapest flower to buy in South Africa?

Small bunches are the lowest-priced real flowers we sell, and at R199.95 a lily bunch sits right at the bottom of our flower range, level with two small sunflower mixes. The full picture is on our flowers under R300 page.

Flower Price FAQs

How much should a bouquet of flowers cost in South Africa?

Most of our catalogue sits between R300 and R800: 126 of the 189 items on this site fall inside that window, and the middle price across the catalogue is R589.95. Under R300 buys a small bunch; over R800 you are paying for size, a vase or a slower-growing flower, or for a gift crate rather than flowers.

Why do two rose bouquets have completely different prices?

Because roses scale further than any other flower we sell. The lowest-priced rose arrangement in our catalogue is R199.95 and the highest is R4,299.95, and the difference is almost entirely size. It is the same flower throughout, which is why a rose price means little until you know how big the arrangement is.

What is the most expensive flower arrangement in South Africa?

On this catalogue it is the Hundred Red Roses In Glass Cylinder Vase at R4,299.95, the highest-priced of the 189 items we sell. Outside roses the ceiling is far lower: R1,799.95 for the most expensive protea arrangement, R799.95 for the most expensive lily one.

Do flower prices change during the year in South Africa?

They can, which is why every figure here carries a date. Catalogue prices are not fixed and can move without notice, so treat this page as a snapshot: every price on it was read from our own catalogue on 4 October 2026.

Does ordering flowers online cost more than buying them in person?

We can only speak for our own catalogue, so we will not guess at what a shop down the road charges. What an online order adds is whatever delivery charge applies at checkout; what it saves is the trip, and the flowers arrive in someone else’s hands without you carrying them there.

Pick a Number, Then Pick the Flowers

The useful way to buy flowers is backwards from the budget rather than forwards from the catalogue. Decide the number first — R300, R500, R800 — and the choice stops being overwhelming, because each band has a character of its own rather than just more stems. Everything on the site under R500 is 81 of our 189 items, and the fastest way to see what a real budget actually buys.
