Pringle Bay is a small coastal village tucked in at the foot of Hangklip, reached along the R44 from Gordon's Bay on one of the most beautiful drives in the country. It carries the name of Rear-Admiral Thomas Pringle, who commanded the naval station at the Cape in the late 1790s. The village and everything around it fall inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, and residents are famously protective of the place - dirt roads, no street lights, and nothing much louder than the birds and the sea. Many of the houses in Pringle Bay are holiday homes, opened up for summers and long weekends, and southern right whales pass close inshore in season.
