Rooi Els is a tiny village on the eastern edge of False Bay, where the Rooi Els River runs out to the sea stained dark by the fynbos it has passed through. The name means red alder in Afrikaans, although the tree no longer grows anywhere near here. Clarence Drive, the R44, curls past on its way between Gordon's Bay and Pringle Bay, and the village sits inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve with its extraordinary concentration of plant life. The roads are untarred, narrow and unlit, and there is virtually nothing built along the shoreline - no shops, no kiosks. In Rooi Els, baboons and dassies outnumber the traffic.
